May 12 - June 16, 2013 National Family Month

National Family Month is celebrated every year from Mother's Day through Father's Day.
This year it runs from May 12 to June 16, 2013.

May 15, 2013 is the United Nations International Day of Families.
The 2013 theme is "Advancing social integration
and intergenerational solidarity."
The Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) supports the worldwide observance of 15 May by preparing background information on the family for use by Governments, the UN system, including the regional commissions, and UN Information Centres and NGOs. An annual message of the Secretary-General is prepared for wide distribution.

"Families hold societies together, and intergenerational relationships extend this legacy over time. This year’s International Day of Families is an occasion to celebrate connections among all members of the constellation that makes up a family. It is also an opportunity to reflect on how they are affected by social and economic trends – and what we can do to strengthen families in response...."

August is Family Meal Month
The Rewards are Amazing
Make the Time

Family meal time is an ageless tradition shared by people all around the world. Eating dinner together keeps the doors of communication open. It's a perfect time to show your children they are your priority. Studies have shown children who eat dinner with their families are less likely to use alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs and more likely to develop good eating habits.

Family Dinner
Segment from World Report, April 2009
A recent family study conducted by Brigham Young University, quizzed more than 1500 IBM employees. The results show that families who spend time eating dinner together will encounter less conflict between family and work.

The BYU study appeared in issues of Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal, The Wall Street Journal, U.S. News and World Report and Slate magazine. Dr. Jacob expressed the hope for society to value dinner time, and not allow things to interrupt it.

In fact, a multi-national study cited by the marriage and family therapy program at the University of Minnesota and its director, reports family meal time has a more positive influence on emotional and intellectual development in children and teens than sports or additional time in school.

July is Sandwich Generation Month
“Three Generations Bound By Caring”

The Sandwich Generation is a generation of people who care for their aging parents while supporting their own children. It is a commemoration and celebration of dedication, patience and caring. The goal is to raise awareness of the tireless efforts of (and support available to) members of this growing generation.

Sandwich Generation Month is held every July and brings the community and families together to heighten understanding of the special needs of this generation. It also spotlights community support available to those working hard to maintain multi-generational families.

According to the Pew Research Center, just over 1 of every 8 Americans aged 40 to 60 is both raising a child and caring for a parent.
